POPULAR FORCES
Early Self Defense Force Patch
Late Popular Forces Patch
The Popular Forces were around since 1955 as the Self Defense Force, but were officially created in April 1956 with 48,000 troops armed with French weapons. The Self Defense Force was established to free regular forces from internal security duties while providing a police organization at village level to protect the population from subversion and intimidation. Units of four to ten men each were organized in villages with 1,000 or more inhabitants. By 1959 their forces had declined to about 40,000.
In 1961 the Popular Forces (formerly Self-Defense Corps) was reorganized into squads and platoons and underwent intensified training. Training centers were established in 26 provinces where a six week program of instruction was offered. With the lowest recruiting priority, the Popular Forces suffered deficiencies in all aspects of training. The Regional and Popular Forces depended on volunteers to swell their ranks, and often such individuals joined only to escape the more burdensome service in the regular Army. Like the Regional Forces, the Popular Forces were under the same chain of command and with the same difficulties with logistics and leadership.
